Top Tips On How To Create A Professional Organisational Chart
Here's a quick guide on how to create a professional looking org chart for your department. You can easily expand it out to include other departments or even the entire company!

Creating a basic organisational chart is easy following this step by step guide. For a basic departmental chart, it shouldn't take you no longer than a few minutes.

Let's Get Started!
  1. Start with yourself. Draw a box and enter your name, your job title and your department.
  2. Draw a box above yours for you direct supervisor or manager. Enter name, job title and department.
  3. Draw a row of boxes below yours for all the people who report to you. Enter name, job title and department for all of them.

  4. TOP TIP

Boxes are usually drawn bigger for higher-ups (supervisors or managers), same size for peers, smaller for subordinates. All boxes should be the same size for equal ranks. The size of the box should reflect the position within the organisation.

  5. Draw a solid vertical line from the top of your box to the bottom of your boss's box.
  6. Draw a horizontal line between your box and those of the people who report to you.
  7. Draw a vertical line from the bottom of your box to the horizontal line.

  8. TOP TIP

For people who report to you for direction, but report to someone else primarily, use a dashed line rather than a solid line to connect their box to yours.

  9. Draw a vertical line from the top of each of your subordinate's box up to the horizontal line.
  10. If you wish, draw similar boxes and line for any people who report to your subordinates.
  11. If you have an opening in your organisation, draw a box for that position. Show their name as TBH (to be hired) or TBD (to be determined) and the job title for that position and department.
  12. For a more professional looking chart add your companies logo and branding, together with photo's. The look and feel of the chart should reflect the company's characteristics.

  13. TOP TIP

Using organisational charting software such as OrgPlus can ease the process and give a more professional finish to your organisational chart.
